Definitely a point gained was how Kildare manager, Brian Flanagan, summed up Saturday's game.
“People talk about the bodies we were down and unavailable but we never felt like that, we concentrated on the lads we had and came here believing we could get a result, we got a point and Division 2 is going to be ultra competitive , we are not going to win every game, we are not going to lose every game but we will be in the fight every single game we go out.”
The manager added that when you talk about character and resilience you really have to deliver when things are against you, but with ten minutes to go you are a man down a couple of points down and I thought our lads stood up, showed an unbelievable character and grit.
“The result is a good sign, coming up here and getting a point, people says we are inexperienced, too young, I don't necessary believe that, you have to trust in the young lads, they are fearless, just look at Colm Moran, at 19 going in for the last ten minutes he won one or two or three incredible balls that he had no right to win.
Asked about Eoin Lawlor, the manger said another lad that has a tough 12 months with injures but he came through today, the same as James Harris, we have had to manage him, similar to Pardaic Spillane.
The test now the manager was asked, you have to go out now next week and back this up.
“Absolutely” was the reply, adding “but that is what the League is all about you can't get carried with a win or a draw, or indeed a defeat, you have to take the good with the bad and move on.
“Our mentality is to take it game by game regardless what is throw at you.”
On Brian McLoughlin the manager said he feels “Mackie has shown great leadership in the last couple of months, he is one of our main leaders, his ball-striking today was brilliant.”
And next week?
“We had great battles with Offaly last year and next Saturday will be no different, really looking forward to it, home games are massive, we have four so really looking forward to next Saturday, a massive game.”
