South Kildare should be recognised for experiencing an "outstanding year in sport" during 2025, according to a local councillor.
Labour Party Cllr Mark Leigh made the comments while in attendance at the latest Athy Municipal District (MD) meeting on Monday, January 19 last.
Near the end of the meeting, he motioned for the MD Athy Municipal District to acknowledge "the teams and individuals whose achievements made it an outstanding year for sport in South Kildare".
His motion was seconded by Fianna Fáil Cllr Brian Dooley.
In response to Cllr Leigh's motion, KCC explained that the Protocol for Ceremonial Functions and Civic Honours sets out the procedure for affording recognition to an individual or group.
"There is no provision therein to commemorate several groups and individuals simultaneously, as envisaged in the motion," KCC said. "Informally, the Cathaoirleach and members offer such congratulations at the commencement of MD meetings."
KCC added that these messages are recorded in the minutes of the meetings.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Veralouise Behan then spoke up and suggested creating a "miscellaneous fund" and using the money contained within it for a celebration event.
The Mayor of the MD, Fine Gael Cllr Ivan Keately, also said that he would be "willing to explore" this idea too.
