Mixed emotions was how Kildare manager, Pat Sullivan, described his feelings following his side's four point defeat in the Lidl National Football League, Division 1, Round 2 game played at Manguard Park, Hawkfield, on Sunday afternoon.
“The first fifteen minutes we really demanded, controlled everything and we went three or four points up, but then just sloppiness, turn-over ball was given away unforced and we got punished.
“The second half we had some real good chances, had the chance of a goal, there were breaches, many but they were on both sides so they more or less evened out, that's all down to learning the new rules, and I wouldn't have any problem there.”
The manager said that he felt there could have been a bit of a hangover from last week they went to Cork and came away with a point.
“We looked a bit tired near the of it there, maybe that was what we put into the first game; the performance last week, to be fair, was really, really good and to be honest, our display today in patches was very good; for forth-five minutes of that game today we played well, a lot of those girls this is a learning process, first time in Division 1, they have not been there before, and you are trying to build that panel for the championship, but unfortunately you also need to get points and keep the house in Division 1, and that is priority no. 1; but as we said initially this was the second game in a block of three, we travel to Galway next, if we get a result there we would have four points and that would be a massive start, but we need to improve massively, particularly in our own unforced errors and be more clinical.”
The manager added that he and his management are trying to mind players, giving as many as possible time but also trying to ensure not to overload anyone, this is a long league, next week again, we want to avoid injuries if we can at all, if a player misses one game she is in danger of missing a couple due to the tightness of the fixture, but we will up and go again next weekend.
