A group based in County Kildare is seeking the assistance of the public in relation to an Asian hornet monitoring project.
The species of hornet, also known as the "yellow-legged hornet", is an invasive species which was first sighted in Ireland back in 2021.
However, the discovery of an Asian hornet nest in Ireland back in August of last year has stirred up renewed caution and interest in the species.
And now, agricultural co-operative Cill Dara Honey has announced that it is coordinating an Asian hornet monitoring project.
The group explained: "We’re looking for people who can host a small monitoring station in their garden or place of work around Kildare and surrounding counties.
"If you’re interested, please message us on WhatsApp or via our page with your Eircode, so we can create a map and achieve the maximum geographical coverage possible and make arrangements to get a monitoring station out to you."
Cill Dara Honey further said: "The monitoring stations are on pre order and immediately unavailable, but we would like to have a network of people and places to put them when they are available.
"They will come with a lure or bait and that will need to be refreshed every two to three weeks; but it can be bought or made at home with a fairly straight forwards recipe of blackberry jam, sugar, hot water and yeast.
"They also need a six milimetre hole drilled into them and the addition of a sponge to prevent the killing of any bycatch caught in the monitoring station"
Cill Dara Honey also clarified the project has commenced immediately, and will continue throughout the summer.
In addition, the group said that there is a suggested contribution of €10 towards the cost of each monitoring station. However, this is not essential to receiving one.
Concluding its appeal, Cill Dara Honey said: "Every location helps, and together we can make a real difference towards saving all our native biodiversity from this apex predator with no natural enemies."
Further information about the project, as well as the contact details for Cill Dara Honey, can be found here.
