New cycle lanes and footpaths planned in Kildare 'should not go ahead'

A cycle lane in Naas

Plans to promote more walking and cycling by building new footpaths and cycle lanes should be abandoned.

A call for "expensive street and road modification policies to reduce motorised traffic" in Naas town centre to be shelved, has come from independent councillor Seamie Moore.

The plans are part of Kildare Sustainable Travel Programme, which seeks to halve transport emissions by 2030.

Cllr Moore said that money should instead be invested in a "townwide public bus service."

He says this would reduce short journey car travel to the rail station, workplaces, the town centre, schools, the hospital, bus terminals and social destinations.
