Kildare County Council is to contact the National Transport Authority following a councillor's representations

Kildare County Council is to contact the National Transport Authority to put forward a suggestion for a shuttle bus service to link up with rail services at peak hours from Clane, Prosperous and surrounding areas.

The suggestion for the extra bus service was raised by Cllr Paula Mulroe (SD) at a recent Clane Maynooth Municipal District meeting, held on Friday, May 1 2026.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Mulroe said she acknowledged that the area of public transport is not within the remit of the council, but she very much welcomed the “positive response” to her motion from the local authority.

Referencing the amount of traffic congestion in Prosperous and Clane, she said any increase in public transport for the towns would be of huge benefit to the local area.

Supporting the motion, Cllr Pádraig McEvoy (IND) told the council that other local authorities have a mobility forum in place whereby stakeholders come from the public transport sector, and “explore ideas that hadn't been thought possible before.”

Also supporting the motion, Cllr Angela Feeney (LAB) said she welcomed the suggestion to write to the NTA and suggested the NTA meet with councillors to discuss the issues, as councillors were the ones “on the ground.”

Cathaoirleach Cllr Brendan Wyse (FG) said the local link services were “a great success”, and commended Cllr Mulroe on her motion.

Responding to the council, Cllr Mulroe said the mobility forum, as suggested by Cllr Pádraig McEvoy, was “a wonderful idea” whereby stakeholders could meet and the council could “make our case” for additional transport links.

She said there was a need to have a mobility forum in place, and she strongly supported the idea.

A report issued by the council stated: “Kildare County Council does not have a role in the scheduling of public transport services. We will however, forward this suggestion to the National

Transport Authority (NTA) and the service provider for consideration.

“Where a new route is deemed feasible by the NTA and the service provider, the council will work

with all parties to provide the required stop approvals at existing bus stops or provide

new bus stops/infrastructure where required.”
