Gardaí have arrested two men, both aged 27 years, in connection with a robbery that occurred at Leighlinbridge Post Office, County Carlow this morning at approximately 10a.m.
Two men, one believed to be armed with a firearm and the other in possession of a hammer, entered Leighlinbridge Post Office this morning. They threatened and assaulted a member of staff before leaving the post office with an amount of cash. Both men were wearing balaclavas and fled the scene in a car described as being a white coloured Honda.
Gardaí from the Thomastown District were diverted from a separate operation and assisted local Gardaí, setting up a number of checkpoints, establishing a cordon around the general area.
Gardaí then received a report that a white car was being set on fire near the Burrin Manor housing estate, Carlow. The two men were arrested a short distance from this scene and are currently detained at Carlow and Thomastown Garda Stations under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939-’98 as amended.
An amount of cash has been recovered by Gardaí.
Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact them at Carlow Garda Station on 059 9136620, The Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
