Cllr Thomas Redmond has defended his hometown of Athy after it appeared at No 3 on an online list of the Worst Towns in Ireland. The 16 towns featured also includes Monasterevin and Newbridge at No 12 and No 13. The number one on the list is Larne in Co Antrim. Cllr Redmond said: "Athy is a fantastic town with loads going for it. "It improves every year in its tidy towns competitions and was the first town in Kildare to have a business shop front painting scheme with nearly all empty shops painted." He added: "There is lots being done in Athy and the town has won many awards in recent times and been recognised as a walled town a heritage town and a place that's to receive millions of euro in rejuvenation."
