Gardaí have arrested a man following a major operation in Edenderry yesterday evening. The incident began at Churchview Heights at 5.45pm according to a Garda spokesman, though the Offaly Express website report that Gardaí detained the man on the grounds of St Mary's Secondary School at 7pm, more than one kilometre away. The man, who is in his 30s, has been detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, though Gardaí are unable to confirm what the exact nature of the crime being committed was due to the ongoing nature of the operation. Armed officers are said to have stormed through the secondary school grounds in Edenderry, with the Offaly Express stating that they were carrying machine guns according to witnesses. The man is currently being held in Tullamore Garda Station.
