KCC says “issues with the illegal disposal of domestic waste into public street bins”

Domestic refuse is being brought to bins provided by Kildare County Council in Sallins.

KCC was replying to a request for two solar bins along the canal bank in Sallins by local councillor Carmel Kelly who said there is a “highly active” Tidy Towns group in the area and the town’s Tidy Town points ratings has been improving.

Cllr Kelly also told a Naas Municipal District meeting that the canal area is a tourist destination in summer particularly for cyclists. She said she would allocate money from funding she has control over.

She also suggested that the bins should bear the message “smile you’re on camera” to convey the impression that there is camera surveillance in the area and to acknowledge the presence of cameras in the area.

KCC pointed on that there a four “four standard litter bins provided along the canal in Sallins” - two on either side of the waterway.

It also said that previous experience there has “highlighted ongoing issues with the illegal disposal of domestic waste into public street bins, which reduces their effectiveness and increases servicing demands.”

KCC also pointed out that solar-powered compacting bins, including “big belly” units, can sometimes serve to worsen illegal domestic waste dumping “due to their size and enclosed design, which may make it easier for individuals to dispose of household waste improperly.”

Money will be needed to pay for the bins and for annual servicing charges and if this is available one can be provided on a trial basis.

KCC said this trial “would allow for an assessment of its performance, servicing needs and impact on illegal dumping before any consideration is given to additional installations.”
