Des was described as ‘a gentle giant gone far too soon’

Many tributes have been paid to a Kildare hurler who has died in the US.

Des Brennan, 47, came from Hollywood Park in the town and was well known across the GAA playing fields with numerous Naas GAA teams, along with other family members.

Des attended Naas CBS and graduated from UCD before taking up employment with AIB.

He worked in AIB’s New York office and also worked for TD Bank.

Although best known as a hurler he also played Gaelic football and rugby.

Des battled leukemia during three periods over the last eight years.

An event honouring his life takes place today in Pennsylvania, where he lives (in Derwin) and his funeral takes place in St Corban’s Cemetery, Naas, on Tuesday, August 4, following requiem mass in the Church of Our Lady and St David, Sallins Road, Naas.

He will be reposing at the family home on Monday August 3, from 4-7pm.

Des is survived by his wife Amy; children Bella, Charlie and Grace as well as his parents Des and Mary and brothers John, Patrick, Gerard (his twin) and Martin.

He was described as “a gentle giant who is gone far too soon” by one of the many who knew him and mourns his passing.

“My heart is broken after hearing this devastating news. I worked with Des in AIB in New York. He was my line manager when I arrived in NY with no idea what I was doing. Des was so kind and patient, and we became good friends,” said a former colleague.

Another commented: “Des was an example of a man - intelligent but patient, competitive but considerate, and knew the value of work and play. He was great company, fun and funny - Des always seemed to be smiling or laughing.

“Growing up in Hollywood Park and playing sports with the lads, their huge sense of family, loyalty and togetherness was always clear. It's a strength that supported Des through these last years, and I'm sure will help them all through the difficult times ahead. I hope the happy memories they share can offset some of their pain, even with this great loss. The gap he leaves is a sign of the mark he made.”

Another said: “I knew Des since we were kids and he was always one of the soundest people you could ever meet. He was a gentleman. A great character. He brought a lot of light to the world and it was an honour to know him. God bless you all at this incredibly difficult time.”
