Kildare County Council will begin the public consultation process for installing Ornamental Lights on the main street in Celbridge to replace the current outdated street lighting.

Fianna Fail TD, Frank O’Rourke has been working with the Tidy Towns Committee and Cllr Micheal Coleman on the issue for a number of years to improve the overall aesthetics of the town centre.

Funding was secured for this project which is set to dramatically improve the look of the town and remove the last of the overhead ESB cables.

Mr O'Rourke said: “I have a vision for our town centre in Celbridge. With the impacts of recession, the structural shift to online purchasing and ever bigger shopping centres available to consumers, I have watched many town centres lose their character, lose footfall and are left lifeless.

"We must build our town centres, not squeeze the life out of them and ensure we make them an attractive place to visit or shop in.”

“We all rely on a functioning, vibrant and engaging civic focal point. In Celbridge, we are making progress in relation to improving our town centre. We have removed all the Eircom poles and wires on the main street, we have a sensible pay parking policy, Celbridge has benefited from the Shop Front Grant Scheme and now the remaining overhead cables on the main street will be removed.’ stated Deputy O’Rourke.

“I know this project was first brought to the attention of Kildare Co Co over 25 years ago.

"I am delighted that the focused and positive approach that we adopted to secure funding for this project has worked. It is important that Celbridge secures its fair share of funding for such project.”

“I want to acknowledge the work of Kildare Co Co, local community groups, and in particular with Celbridge Tidy Towns Committee, all who are working with me for the common objective of improving our town centre. The installation of Ornamental lighting on the main street will dramatically improve the look of the town and is another step in the right direction.”
