Kildare Gardaí were detecting drivers in Naas

A driver was detected travelling at 105km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Monread Road in Naas as part of an ongoing Garda Roads Policing operation over the October bank holiday weekend.

The incident was among a number of notable speeding detections recorded by An Garda Síochána on Friday, October 23rd, during the nationwide road safety operation, which runs from Thursday, October 22nd, to Tuesday, October 27th, 2026.

Two days into the operation, two people have died in separate fatal collisions on Irish roads, bringing the total number of road fatalities nationally so far this year to 153.

Gardaí confirmed that 40 people had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the first two days of the operation.

More than 1,570 drivers were detected for speeding offences, while over 200 motorists were caught using a mobile phone while driving or failing to wear a seatbelt.

The Roads Policing operation includes Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints and high-visibility policing checkpoints across the country.

Other notable speeding detections on Friday included a driver travelling at 93km/h in a 60km/h zone in Tankardstown, Ballylinan, County Laois; 111km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R147 at Commons of Lloyd, Kells, County Meath; and 156km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 at Lecarrow, Ballinafad, County Sligo.

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority are urging all road users to take extra care throughout the October bank holiday weekend.

Gardaí have also reminded motorists to be particularly mindful of vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, while pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to remain visible in darker conditions and stay alert to their surroundings.

Road users are being urged to slow down, obey speed limits, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wear seatbelts and avoid distractions from mobile devices while driving.

Gardaí say everyone has a role to play in ensuring people reach their destinations safely over the bank holiday weekend.
