Athy boys come good in second half

After drawing thier opening game in this season’s Bro Bosco Cup, Group 7, Ard Scoil Na Tríonóide Athy recorded a fine win on Monday defeating Good Counsel New Ross with a fine second half display, 2-9 to 1-7.

Goals from Sean Rowan and Orran Langton saw the Kildare school get over the line after a much improved second half display.

Calum Keaveny didn’t start for Ard Scoil but he made an impact on his introduction for the second half.

The New Ross school took the lead from a James Finlay penalty in the tenth minute after the Athy defence was penalised for touching the ball on the ground in the square. The outstanding Rowan kept the score board ticking over for Athy with a two-pointer from play and one from a free. Good Counsel had further scores from a free from centre half back, Sean Doyle and a ’45 from Finlay to lead 1-3 to 0-4 at the break.

Keaveny’s involvement from the restart switched the momentum towards Ard Scoil as Good Counsel never reached their performance levels of the first half. Hugh Kennedy, the midfield pairing of Padraig Grufferty and Peter Dunne as well as the threat of Keaveny and Rowan up front was something which the Wexford school never really came to terms with. Points from Rowan and Keaveny levelled the game and Ard Scoil took the lead for the first time in the 41st minute when Rowan fed Orran Langton for the goal.

Finlay responded with a free for Good Counsel two minutes later but Rowan’s free kick from out on the left deceived the Good Counsel defence and goalkeeper and ended in the net for a commanding lead for the home side.

A point each from Jack Kelly, substitute, Max Conway and Rowan left Ard Scoil comfortable with Good Counsel having to settle for a point from play from Doyle and another one from a Finlay free.
