Excellent minor final sees Eadestown edge it over Towers

Eadestown collected the Manguard Plus Minor Football Championship ‘B’ title at Cedral St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge with a four point win over Round Towers, in a game that threw-in at 11.30.

A lively opening half in the bright sunshine with an 11.30 start and it was Round Towers who opened the scoring with a Paudi Ryan point. Eadestown responded quickly with the impressive Max Sargent getting the boys in blue off the mark after seven minutes.

Sargent then converted a free after Towers were penalised for a delayed kick-out.

Sargent who looked very dangerous from the get go then added his and his side’s third point on ten minutes.

Round Towers came more into the game at this point, Evan Kavanagh pointed a free but that was responded to by Oscar Gough who made it 0-4 to 0-2 with thirteen minutes on the clock.

Towners hit back with a Charlie Mahony point from play.

Noah Quinn, wing-back for Towers picked up a yellow for what looked like an excellent shoulder before Jamie Fox came forward to fire over a free and level affairs with twenty minutes gone.

The boys in black and amber then saw a 45 from Jamie Wall come off the crossbar, Paudi Ryan gathered and whether he went for a point or a goal it matters little but his shot ended up in the top corner of Harry Doyle’s net.

Within a minute there was a goal at the opposite, this time Evan Cahill got inside the define and made no mistake from close range to make it 1-4 apiece with 23 gone.

Charlie Mahony converted a free to level but Max Sargent showing his skill again with an excellent point edged Eadestown ahead as the half-time whistle arrived, Eadestown leading by minimum 1-6 to 1-5.

Towers got the ideal start to the second half when a brilliant ball in from Sean Gleeson put Charlie Mahony and the centre forward made no mistake filling the Eadestown net and taking a two-point lead.

Man of the match Max Sargent took a short free to the in-rushing Daniel Sargent who fired over. Evan Kavanagh replied with a free to leave the score reading Round Towers 2-6 Athgarvan 1-7.

Towers were then hit with a major blow when Charlie Mahony was shown a straight red by referee Jamie Hoban.

That certainly gave Eadestown the momentum to kick on and they duly did firing over four points in a row, two from Liam Mescal, and one each from Max Sargent and an Evan Cahill free to lead now 2-11 to 2-6 as we reached the half way point.

Eddie Kavanagh got one back, a free, for Towers and when Paudi Ryan got his first to a Jamie Wall 45 quickly followed by an Ollie Deller point the lead was down to two with 49 on the clock.’

A foul on Conor Morrin saw Max Sargent increase the lead and while Sean O’Carroll replied for Towers; two late points for Max Sargent and Conor Morrin saw Towers take the Mick Leavy Cup on a final score line of Eadestown 2-14 Round Towers 2-10
