KILDARE: There's a need for a new canal bridge in Naas

Naas canal banks will be closed to traffic every Sunday of the year

Grand Canal, Naas

A new canal spanning the Grand Canal should be constructed in Naas.

Green Party councillor Bob Quinn has made a pitch for a bridge at the third lock, connecting

Aylmer Park, Monread, Oldtown Demesne, Landen Park, The Orchard with  the other

residential estates on the other side of the waterway.

He told a Naas Municipal District meeting this should be included as part of the public consultation process for the Naas to Sallins greenway.

He said if no bridge is provided then a big part of the town won’t be able to connect to the canal “in a meaningful way.”

But, according to Kildare County Council, the provision of a bridge across the canal at this location is not included in the plans for the greenway.

However, the location of a future link across the canal will be indicated as part of the project plans so that “the public can comment on this potential new permeability link.”
