Kildare was one of the biggest recipients of new homes in Ireland in 2024 with 54.3% of all completions for the full year being in Dublin or the mid-east (Kildare, Louth, Meath, and Wicklow), according to the Central Statistic Office's (CSO) figures.
However, the total number of homes built in 2024 dropped 6.7% to 30,330 homes from the previous year. The figure means that the Government missed its target established under Housing for All plan of building 33,000 homes.
In August of last year, then Taoiseach Simon Harris stated, "This year, we will exceed our housing targets with almost 40,000 homes built." Harris added at the time that the target for new homes over the next five years was a quarter of million.
The biggest drop in type of dwelling was apartments with a 24% drop on 2023 and just 8,763 built overall.
In 2024, according to the CSO, 53.4% of completions were scheme dwellings, 28.9% were apartments, and 17.7% were single dwellings.
