Hundreds of homes without power or water across Kildare as GAA club opens its doors

Storm damage at Fishery Lane, Naas

Hundreds of homes across County Kildare remain without electricity in the wake of Storm Éowyn which blasted through Ireland last weekend. The rare weather event meant a status red weather warning for the county, which was later downgraded to a yellow warning.

However the stormy conditions have left many people without a power supply.

Some 118 customers in Derrymullen have no supply and according to ESB Networks it won’t be restored until February 1.

Some 140 homes have no supply in the Dunfirth area, near Johnstownbridge, and some won’t see it return until Thursday.

Another cohort of 350 have no supply and the ESB is for now unable to indicate when it will be restored.

Earlier today some 44 and 11 homes are impacted in Kilmeague and Ballyteague respectively and it's hoped they will have their supply back on January 30 and January 29 respectively. There are 88 customers without power in the Rathbride, Kildare town, area and smaller groups 12 and 15 respectively have not electricity in Lackagh, near Monasterevin, and Athgarvan.

Kildare County Council's crisis management team met yesterday morning to review the ongoing issues in the county caused by  the storm.  Its outdoor workers and parks teams worked across the weekend to clear fallen trees on priority routes.

“While much of this work is now complete,  there are still trees down in housing estates and on some minor roads. Our teams will continue to work to remove trees and debris throughout the week,” a KCC spokesperson added.

Many houses, particularly in the northwest of the county, remain without power and water.  The areas around Clogherinkoe and Clonuff are particularly affected.

Clogherinkoe GAA club opened yesterday (Monday) evening at 7  to provide residents with a place to charge phones, get hot drinks and avail of shower facilities.

KCC extended its gratitude to the club members and officials “for their support during this challenging time.”
