Kildare County Council (KCC) was warned of a "dangerous" lane in the Athy Municipal District (MD) earlier this week by a local representative.

Labour Party Cllr Mark Leigh issued the warning to KCC at the latest MD meeting, which was held on Monday, April 14 last.

At the meeting, he motioned for KCC to work with Rheban GFC in order "to widen and make safer Newtownbert Lane".

His motion was seconded by his party colleague Cllr Aoife Breslin, who is also the Mayor of the MD. It also found support in Fianna Fáil Cllr Veralouise Behan.

Responding to Cllr Leigh's motion, KCC said via its report at the meeting that the lane "could be considered for the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS)".

"If an application is submitted, it will be examined in the context of the 2026 Scheme," KCC added.

Speaking directly to KCC, Cllr Leigh remarked: "To say that this lane is dangerous is an understatement; we need to look at widening it."

However, he also said that he welcomed the news that Newtownbert Lane could be considered for the LIS.

Cllr Leigh further told KCC that he would be "calling into them shortly" regarding the matter.
