The partner stated that he stopped when the child finished school and started paying again when the child went to college.
The court also heard that the partner now has other children to support.
His partner described him as a good father and she said she would not have gone to court but for the fact that he made a conscious decision to stop paying.
The man said the child stays with his for periods including weekends and he takes the child to events such as sports fixtures and training.
Judge Desmond Zaidan commended the pair for working together and he reduced the arrears total to €3,000, which is to be paid off at a nominal rate to include whatever current maintenance payments are due.
The judge said clear bank payment arrangements should be set up to do this.
The judge also said the man was not liable to pay maintenance for the periods during which the child resides with him but this should be communicated to his ex-partner.
