Kildare judge criticises five year delay in bringing case to court

A five year delay in bringing a case to court was criticised by the sitting Kildare judge.

A Dublin man, now aged 22, was prosecuted at Naas District Court.

It was alleged that he was driving under the influence of a drug at a location in north Kildare on December 28, 2020.

It was further alleged that he was driving without insurance at the time.

“It’s not good enough,” said Judge Desmond Ziadan referring to the time lapse, adding that he would not proceed with the case.

He noted that the defendant was aged 17 at the time, which means that he could not have been identified in any media report.

The judge said the allegation was serious because drug driving can potentially kill.

He said he would reluctantly strike the matter out.
