Dozens of new homes coming to South Kildare

Planning permission has been granted for a €6.5 million apartment development in Athy, Co Kildare that will deliver 38 new homes in the town centre.

The development is planned for lands at 58–67 Leinster Street, Nelson’s Yard and Mount Hawkins and will involve the demolition of a number of derelict buildings and storage units currently on the site.

The project will also include the refurbishment of a protected structure (RPS Ref: AY058), with plans to convert the ground floor of the former licensed premises into a one-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom apartment on the first floor, along with a new shopfront and signage.

The remainder of the development will consist of two three-storey blocks containing a mix of apartments and duplex units.

In total, the scheme will provide 12 two-bedroom duplex apartments, four one-bedroom apartments arranged two over two, and 20 additional apartments including one-bedroom units with two-bedroom duplex units overhead.

All homes will have their own-door ground floor access.

Site works will include the closure of three existing vehicular access points and the creation of a new access road, as well as alterations to the public road and footpath along the Mount Hawkins boundary.

A new pedestrian access will also be created at 67 Leinster Street.

The development will provide 14 car parking spaces, 60 cycle parking spaces, laundry and bin storage areas, and landscaped open space including boundary treatments.

The application was submitted by Tim Flood and Niall Langton and was granted planning permission on March 4.

The project was designed by Dooley Cummins Architects & Engineers, Stanhope Street, Athy.

The total floor area of the development is approximately 2,834 square metres.
